Calaceite (2004)
Ink and Stone
In 'Ink and Stone'(Imagine Publishing) the writer and film director Emilio Ruiz Barrachina recovered the historical memory of the people of Calaceite, in Teruel, where some of the most important authors of the latin american 'boom' lived after they arrived in Barcelona. The first writer who settled in the town was Jose Donoso in the 70's, who invited some of the components of the 'boom' such as Mario Vargas Llosa, Jorge Edwards, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Alfredo Bryce Echenique and Carlos Fuentes.
Ruiz Barrachina said today that Donoso came "casually" to Calaceite because his French translator of 'The Dark Bird of Night' had settled there. The writer, who based 'Country House' in the places of Calaceite, bought three fifteenth century houses there and from then on followed the visits of his friends. The author of 'Ink and Stone' said that in the 80's there was a "second wave" of writers who came to Calaceite following the arrival of the Chilean Mauricio Wacquez, the painter Albert Rafols Casamada and the editor Gustavo Gili, who helped to further "mystify" the people. Today, still living in the town located halfway between Teruel and Tarragona are journalist Elsa Arana and writer Natacha Seseña. Also in Calaceite is the Moix House, birthplace of the writers Terenci and Anna Maria Moix. Ruiz Barrachina says that his interest was "talking about people" who lived in that town and who held "unrepeatable gatherings and exchanged information for future books" in their homes.
The author explained that the book idea came up at a conference in Matarraña, which he used to visit Calaceite for his "admiration of Donoso" and because he knew a bit about the legend that surrounded this population, which he researched. "I did not know Wacquez and that encouraged me" he added.
