Winnie (2007)

The business of peace

From the air, southern Sudan is a carpet speckled with green and beige, a volcanic soil, smooth as a gazelle's skin, full of scars and open wounds left by a civil war that has lasted more than two decades. Winnie's life, our protagonist, is set in a camp on the road between Juba, the new capital of Southern Sudan and Yei, a town on the border with Uganda. It is an area full of landmines and anti-tank mines. Winnie is the head of a team of eighteen women who leave at dawn every day, equipped with a precarious protective vest and a metal detector to locate mines and clear them. This documentary not only addresses the manual demining process but also that done with machines or dogs. It is a unique testimony to the history of the documentary where we see for the first time a demining process in real time carried out by Winnie, with the camera located inside the minefield.
